Changhua County is a culturally rich county with many cultural heritages, such as monuments, historic buildings, and groups of buildings. Changhua County Government has been committed to promoting cultural heritage preservation. In order to kick off the “Restoration Project for Changhua County Historic Building of Taiwan Tobacco Plant (dormitory),” the Government held the opening ceremony at Tianzhong Tobacco Warehouse (田中菸葉收納場) near BaoShu Temple, Tianzhong this morning (30th), attended by Wang HuiMei, Changhua County Mayor, Chen ChiMing, Director General of Bureau of Cultural Heritage, Ministry of Culture, and others. According to Mayor Wang, the 86-year-old Taiwan Tobacco Plant (臺灣菸葉耕種時業改進社) was built in 1938, witnessing the history of Taiwan tobacco industry. During the Japanese occupation and in the post-war period, it was used as tobacco collecting and distributing center. Afterwards, three buildings in the plant were officially registered as historic building in 2013. One of whom is the main building of the warehouse whose repair works were all completed in 2013 and are currently reused as senior activity center. The other two are wooden dormitories equipped with counselor’s rooms which were Japanese classical wooden buildings adopting the construction techniques and architectural styles of the time. They are worthy to be preserved and appreciated. The restoration project kicked off today is for these two buildings and is expected to complete on schedule and to specification with the purpose of driving local prosperity and development via cultural heritage preservation, revitalizing the historic buildings and visualizing the charm of the city.
